Battle, Powys

Battle (Y Batel in Welsh) is a village in Powys, Wales. Historically it was a parish in Brecknockshire.

Battle is located aboug 3km north-west of Brecon in the steep-sided valley of the Afon Ysgir.[1]

History and tradition suggests that a place south-west of the village was the site of the Battle of Caer Bannau around 1088, fought between Bleddin ap Maenarch and Bernard de Neufmarche. Bernard's victory left the area in control of the Normans. The village's name first appears as Battle in 1557, and as Bello in 1222-24 so may instead come from Battle Abbey in Sussex.[1]

The parish church is dedicated to St Cynog. It was largely rebuilt in 1880 but retains a roof dating to about 1500. The rest of the village seems to have no early buildings, likely expanding due to 18th century squatters.[1]

The parish was quite small and included no other settlements of note.[2] As a community it was abolished in 1986[3] and made part of the new community of Yscir.[4]
