Forden

From Encyc
St Michael's Church

Forden (Ffordun in Welsh) is a village and former parish in Powys, Wales. It was in the historic county of Montgomeryshire, next to the border with Shropshire. The parish also included the village of Kingswood, and the hamlets of Cilcewydd and Fron.[1]

Today the area is part of Forden with Leighton and Trelystan Community Council, alongside of course the village of Leighton and the hamlet of Trelystan.

Forden was one of few Welsh places included in the Domesday Book, as Furtune. This name comes from the Old English words "ford" and "tun", however the village is not near a river so "ford" might refer to a road, hence it likely means "settlement by a road".[2]

St Michael's Church was entirely rebuilt in 1867, nothing remains of the previous church, which dated to the medieval period.[3]
