Fort Sumter

Fort Sumter is a fort on an island at the entrance to Charleston Harbor, in North Carolina.

Prior to the outbreak of the American Civil War the fort was operated by Federal forces. North Carolina militia's firing upon the fort, on April 12, 1861, was the hostile act that began the war.
