The Global Age is a new phase of the Information Age, beginning in the year 2009. [1]

This age, which is just beginning, is defined by the decline of both American and Russian influence on the now global economy. [2]

Backdrop: Early Information Age (1970-2008)[edit]

Beginning around 1970 [3], computers made the distribution of information much faster and easier.

When the 21st century began, this linked economies so tightly that each became dependent on the other, and cultural exchange between nations was no longer limited in any way by distance.

Beginning of a Global Society[edit]

The World Wide Web expanded extremely quickly, being invented in 1989 and having 1 billion users only 20 years later. [4]

The Great Recession affected the entire world, causing world leaders, including Barack Obama, to meet at the 2009 G-20 London summit and create a new world order to regulate the economy. [5]

Multiculturalism became both widely popular and widely criticized in the 2000s. Generation Y has been said to be supportive of multiculturalism. [6]

Changes[edit]

  • Immigration has become both more common, and more difficult.
  • Places such as Europe are becoming largely multicultural for the first time in history.
