Haiti

From Encyc

Haiti is a country in the Caribbean Sea, one of the West Indies.

It was founded by rebellious slaves during the Napoleonic Wars. Its founding father was General Toussaint L'Overture, who died in 1803 while imprisoned at the Chateau de Joux in eastern France. Prior to that it had been a French colony known mainly for producing sugar. The reparations paid by Haiti to France for their revolution crippled the first black republic for years to come.

Napoleon's loss of Haiti (along with his need for money) led him to sell the Louisiana Territory to Thomas Jefferson in 1803 at a bargain price, which Jefferson did not actually have the Constitutional authority to pay. Though Jefferson had historically been very much opposed to any such expansion of the powers of the president, the deal was too difficult for him to resist.

In 2015-16, three different people named Moïse (Moses) ran for President: Jovenel Moïse finally won the election after the first round in 2015 had been canceled. (Elèksyon san frod , se koubouyon san piman: an election without fraud is like unseasoned broth).
