The Other Bennet Sister |
Janice Hadlow is an author and former senior television producer for the BBC. She left the BBC after a long and successful career, in 2015. She'd published a biography of George III, entitled A Royal Experiment: Love and Duty, Madness and Betrayal—the Private Lives of King George III and Queen Charlotte, in 2014.[1] She published The Strangest Family: The Private Lives of George III, Queen Charlotte and the Hanoverians in 2015.[2]
In 2020 she published a novel, entitled The Other Bennet Sister, based on the characters in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.[3] It tells a story of Mary Bennet, the forgotten middle sister, in the Bennet family. Many commentators noted that, while plucky Elizabeth Bennet was the sister readers admired, it was wallflower ugly-duckling Mary that most readers were likely to identify with.
The BBC acquired the rights to produce a 10-part miniseries based on her novel, which is scheduled to be broadcast in 2026.
In 2024 the BBC announced it would be working on a 10-part television series based on her novel, which is scheduled to be broadcast in 2026.
Hadlow published a second novel, a regency romance entitled, The Rules of the Heart, in late 2025.[4]

Titled The Other Bennet Sister, the 10-part drama will focus on Mary Bennet – Lizzy’s supposedly unremarkable sister and the middle Bennet daughter that is typically overlooked.
