Kim Il-sung was the first ruler of North Korea. North Korea and South Korea are two new states formed froum what was originally the single state of Korea, after its Japanese occupiers left when Japan was defeated in World War 2.

Forces from the Soviet Union occupied the north, and American forces occupied the south. The Soviets installed Kim, a north Korean communist, who had gone to University in Moscow. Kim had lead an anti-Japanese militia, backed by the Soviet Union, durint World Wat 2.

Kim's son, Kim Jong-il was Kim's chosen successor. He, in turn, chose his son, Kim Jong-un as his successor.
