Llandyssil

From Encyc
The Upper House pub

Llandyssil (spelt Llandysul in Welsh) is a village on the River Severn in Powys, Wales. It has a population of about 300.

Historically it was a parish in Montgomeryshire, also including the nearby village of Abermule.[1] It is now a community in local government, expanded to include Aberbechan and Llanmerewig, and renamed to Abermule with Llandyssil.

The church was built by 5th-century saint Tysul, and it was recorded in 1254 as Llandeshul. Its medieval structures were demolished and replaced in 1863.[2]

The Welsh Language Commissioner recommends that the name should be spelt as Llandysul in both English and Welsh.[3] Llandyssil is a long-standing anglicisation of the original Welsh name, which remains in use as the area has a low percentage of Welsh speakers.[4]

  4. Compare Llandysul in Ceredigion, from the same Welsh name, and had the same anglicisation. But it fell out of use as Ceredigion has a high percentage of Welsh speakers.
