Llanelieu

Llanelieu is a small village in Powys, Wales, just east of Talgarth. Historically it was a parish in Brecknockshire.
The first name recorded for the place is Llangelen in the mid-12th century. Llangeleu appears in 1210 but by the 15th century it had became Llanelewyth and Llaneliw. In Welsh the place is called Llanellyw which suggests a church of St Ellyw (supposedly a grand-daughter of Brychan), who the parish church is indeed dedicated to. However Ellyw's late appearance in the place name suggests it may be a back formation, and that the name may actually derive from a stream called Gelyw.[1]
St Ellyw's Church supposedly dates to the 13th century and has had minor changes in the years since.[1]
The parish extended quite deep into the Black Mountains, reaching the border with Monmouthshire. This area includes a few farms and no other settlements of note.[2] As a community it was abolished in 1986.[3] Llanelieu village is now part of Talgarth community, with the southern areas in the Black Mountains instead moved to The Vale of Grwyney.
