Llanywern

From Encyc
St Mary's Church

Llanywern is a small village in Powys, Wales. Historically it was a parish in Brecknockshire.

Local tradition suggests that a church was founded there in the 6th century. Evidence points towards an early medieval origin for the church and perhaps the rest of the settlement.[1]

The earliest mention of the place is around 1100 as Landwern altera costinio which likely meant a "church near a marsh". From c.1566 it is recorded as Llan y wern mair a chynydr which suggests an earlier dedication to St Cynidr.[1]

St Mary's Church dates to the 14th century, with some rebuilding in the 17th century and little restoration in the 19th century.[1]

The parish was small, only including the village and a few nearby farms.[2] As a community it was abolished in 1986[3] and absorbed into Llangors community.
