Manafon

From Encyc
St Michael's Church

Manafon is a village and former parish in Powys, Wales. It was in the historic county of Montgomeryshire.

The parish was made up of three townships: Manafon-gaenog, Manafon-llan, and Dwyriw. The village was located in Manafon-llan.[1]

Today the area is governed by Manafon Community Council. The community also includes New Mills and the small settlement of The Green.[2]

The church at Manafon is dedicated to St Michael.[3] It was built in the 14th/15th century. It has a cell thought to be from the 14th century, making it the oldest in Montgomeryshire.[4]

The place name is believed to mean "plain associated with Anafon". Previously it had been believed that the "afon" in the name referred to a river.[4]

There was a motte and bailey castle in Manafon.[4]
