Mongolia

From Encyc

Mongolia is a country in central Asia. It is the country most remote from any ocean.

It has a dry, cold climate with extensive deserts. The capital is Ulaanbaatar. It is located between Russia and China, and adjoins the Siberian and Manchurian regions in those countries. Historically, it was known as Outer Mongolia, with Inner Mongolia being part of China.

In the 13th century the Mongols became famous as conquerors of most of Asia and part of Europe under Genghis Khan. For hundreds of years they ruled Russia as the Golden Horde. Kublai Khan ruled China, and hosted Marco Polo when he came to visit.

In the 20th century, Mongolia was politically aligned with the Soviet Union. More recently it has moved towards Japan, South Korea and the West.

Mongolians traditionally live in yurts and drink fermented mare's milk. They are excellent horsemen and archers, travelling light and using advanced composite bows.
