Pentwynmawr

Pentwynmawr (or Pentwyn-mawr) is a village near Newbridge in South Wales.
The place name means "top of the large hill", as it is at the top of a steep hill just west of Newbridge. "Mawr" may also mean "greater" or "major" to distinguish from the nearby smaller village of Pentwyn.[1]
Pennar Tunnel is a former railway tunnel that extends for 364m near Pentwynmawr. In 2017 it was reported as one of five abandoned tunnels in Wales which were a priority to be reopened for public use.[2] At Pennar Lane there is a footbridge/aqueduct which crossed the Taff Vale Extension Railway. It may date to the late 1850s.[3]
Pentwynmawr Primary School was opened in 1912[4] and is still open as of 2026.[5]
The village football club is Pentwynmawr Athletic AFC who are based at the Welfare Ground.[6]
Pentwynmawr is part of Newbridge community, one of the communities which does not have its own council, in Caerphilly County Borough. It is also part of the Newbridge electoral ward of Caerphilly County Borough Council which has identical boundaries to the community.
