Resolven

War memorial monument in Resolven

Resolven (Resolfen in Welsh) is a village in the Vale of Neath. It has its own community council, which forms part of Neath Port Talbot.

Resolven was originally called Ynysfach, meaning "small island", but changed its name to Resolven in 1850 after the opening of the railway station. The name comes from the Manor of Resolven, perhaps a corruption of "Parsel Soflan".[1]

Prior to the 1830s it was a small hamlet, but it developed further during the 19th century due to coal mining, and after World War II large scale council housing significantly increased the village's population.[1]

Historically Resolven formed a township in the parish of Llantwit-juxta-Neath.[2] Since 1837 it has been its own civil parish, which became a community in 1974.[3]

From the data known, Resolven's population peaked in 1931, with a population of 4,353.[4] As with most towns/villages in the South Wales Valleys it has shrunk since, in 2011 its population was recorded as 2,316.
