Rhossili

From Encyc

Rhossili (spelt Rhosili in Welsh) is a village at the south-western tip of the Gower Peninsula in Swansea, Wales.

The name derives from the Welsh word "rhos" meaning moor, and a personal name "Sulein".

The village is best known for tourism. A long beach runs down Rhossili Bay, north of the village. Behind the beach is Rhossili Down, an area including prehistoric remains, and the highest point on the Gower Peninsula. To the west of Rhossili is an area of over 400,000 sunflowers, and further west is Worm's Head.

Rhossili was a parish, also including the hamlets of Middleton and Pitton.[1] The current community has similar boundaries, though it also includes Pilton Green. As of 2011, the community had a population of 278.

The church, dedicated to St Mary, was built around 1200. It is a rare example of late Norman work in Wales.[2]
