Turkey (country)
Turkey is a country located mostly in Asia Minor, with a small part in Europe. its population is about 72 million (2008) and its capital is Ankara. Its predominant religion is Islam. About 20% of its population are Kurds.
It formerly occupied a much larger area, and was known as the Ottoman Empire, but was broken up after World War I. Its capital then was Istanbul. From 1923 to 1938, its president was Kemal Ataturk, who promoted secularism and economic modernisation.
