Georgia's 6th congressional district[edit]

Encyc: Georgia's 6th congressional district is a congressional district in the U.S. state of Georgia. Georgia's 6th congressional district has existed since January 3, 2013.

Wikipedia: Georgia's 6th congressional district has existed since the 29th Congress (1845–1847), the first Congress in which U.S. representatives were elected from districts rather than at-large. Georgia gained a sixth U.S. representative for the first time in the 13th Congress (1813–1815). --LeicLass (Talk to me!) 09:47, 5 January 2022 (EST)

I took out the contested statement for now. Hopefully the original author will return and clear things up. Enki (talk) 13:53, 5 January 2022 (EST)

hi.[edit]

I would like to have moderations off, if you could??? If not I understand, thanks. Piki877778 (talk) 21:36, 30 August 2023 (EDT)

Done. Thank you for your contributions. Enki (talk) 13:54, 31 August 2023 (EDT)

Why Google doesnt push Rankings?[edit]

In my years working on websites I managed to learn a bit of Search Engine Optimization.

The current database has plenty of links directing Google's crawlers to dead end roads (the pages which are still to be created with red linking text). Ang Google doesnt like wasting their crawl budget, so that will encourage Google to crawl less frquently your website.

I recommend creating a very simple robots file and blocking all crawlers (the legit crawlers like Googlebot will respect the orders on robots.txt file, while the non-legit scrappers wont, so this is just to help Search Engines, but not a security measure).

Here there are instructions from Google on how to do so

File could be something like

  • User-agent: *
  • Allow: /
  • Disallow: */index.php?title=

Adittionally I would suggest you to create an XML sitemap )not sure how to do that without wordpress, but I´m sure you can investigate.

The XML sitemap gives a list of your existing pages, and also provides information about when the last update of each page done. So when Search Engines find your website,m they will inmediately go to explore the new updates done.

Said all that, if you dont want to create a sitemap )WIKIPEDIA doesnt have it either. Then you can remove the last line of the robots.txt file.

Let me know if you need any adittional help about the topic and I can ask a colleague who knows more about the topic.

Cheers!

Thank you for the tips. We did have a sitemap for a while. Mediawiki has a way to create sitemaps but it's a little complicated. I don't think it did any good, and it was very out of date, so I deleted it. Like you said, Wikipedia doesn't have one either. I do have Google configured to check the recent changes XML feed, which should help.
I will take another look at the robots.txt file. Enki (talk) 22:52, 11 October 2023 (EDT)
So I followed up on this and ended up copying Wikipedia's robots.txt file (cc-by-sa). There were a couple of complications like how images are handled and I just figured it would be easier to go with what works for Wikipedia, realizing a lot of the disallow statements will probably do nothing because we have different article names. If strange stuff starts popping up in Google results we'll have a good starting point for fixing it. Enki (talk) 22:44, 28 October 2023 (EDT)

I'm back![edit]

I'm back and plan on creating 1,000 new articles on historic wars, conflicts, battles, and sieges! --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 23:24, 8 June 2024 (EDT)

Very good! You know we love our military history around here. I've been reading Victor Hansons's The End of Everything and thinking we should do more to remember civilizations who were wiped out. Enki (talk) 08:46, 10 June 2024 (EDT)

Editor rights[edit]

Hey, can I request for "editor" rights? I can't access my special contributions! --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 07:13, 23 June 2024 (EDT)

Done. Sorry about all the technical hurdles but you should be good to go with editor. Enki (talk)

Template:Wikidata image[edit]

Hello Enki. Can you remove this template from Template:Infobox person? It's disrupting pages as the template is a dead red link. Check Dove Hepburn for example. You will see Template:Wikidate image in red at the top of the page. --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 16:50, 28 June 2024 (EDT)

I think I got it. Hopefully I didn't mess up the template. Enki (talk) 22:34, 29 June 2024 (EDT)
It now says "2=}}" Update: I replaced Template:Infobox person on Dove Hepburn with Template:Infobox Person. --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 00:44, 30 June 2024 (EDT)

Adminship[edit]

Can I request for adminship? I just thought it would be cool to protect my page Dove Hepburn, so only I and other admins can edit it. Also, if any vandalism occurs, I am willing to defend Encyc. I know it's a huge responsibility, but I aim to protect Encyc from vandals and make Encyc the perfect encyclopedia. I'm already writing great history articles. Plus there aren't any active admins (apart from yourself). I won't let you down! --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 01:38, 30 June 2024 (EDT)

Sorry, not yet. No real need, not with the moderation extension and all. Enki (talk) 20:32, 30 June 2024 (EDT)
I understand. I will continue to work hard for Encyc, writing many more articles, and impress you regardless! --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 23:58, 30 June 2024 (EDT)
Sounds good. Thanks! Enki (talk) 14:20, 2 July 2024 (EDT)

Main page quotes[edit]

Add this to the main page under Tom Waits...Pick which one's your favorite!

Original quotes written by me:

"True writing is the alchemy that turns raw thoughts into golden insights, illuminating the paths of our shared human journey."Dove Hepburn

"Effective writing is the meticulous art of transforming abstract ideas into clear, compelling narratives, thereby enriching the collective understanding and enhancing the human experience."Dove Hepburn

"Exceptional writing meticulously crafts thoughts into articulate expressions, bridging the gap between diverse minds and fostering a profound connection through shared knowledge and insight."Dove Hepburn --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 01:08, 3 July 2024 (EDT)

Dove Hepburn[edit]

Dove Hepburn surpasses Main Page with over 1,057,514 views and becomes Encyc's most popular article. --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 03:04, 8 July 2024 (EDT)

Wait what? That was fast. Enki (talk) 18:15, 8 July 2024 (EDT)
Over 2.1 million views now! --LeicLass 13:44, 30 June 2025 (EDT)

Dove Hepburn[edit]

I speak a multitude of languages aside from English. Is there a way to make more pages on Dove Hepburn in other languages? I can speak 30 other languages! --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 07:19, 16 July 2024 (EDT)

The way Wikipedia does it, they have separate subdomains and volunteers who know each language. I don't think we're ready for that yet. If we do get some momentum going in English, es.encyc.org (Spanish Encyc) would probably be next. Enki (talk) 17:22, 16 July 2024 (EDT)
Maybe as a short term solution we could write Dove Hepburn (Spanish language version), but I'd be hesitant to go too far down that path because it could generate a lot of extra work when we do start the language-specific Encycs. Enki (talk)
--LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 11:15, 17 July 2024 (EDT)
As someone who speaks Spanish and other languages, I could do that hard work! --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 08:28, 25 November 2024 (EST)

Template:Infobox Person[edit]

honorific_prefix and honorific_suffix is missing from the infobox! That's Template:Infobox Person. --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 19:43, 22 July 2024 (EDT)

Years ago we had some trouble with templates and I imported some older versions just to get something running. Many of the current versions on Wikipedia are mixed up with Wikidata and hard to get to work here. I can take a look and try to edit in those two fields. Enki (talk) 13:43, 23 July 2024 (EDT)
I would love to request that when I am finished with the Dove Hepburn article, I'd love it to be fully protected from vandalism with a fully protected template. I'm pretty sure there'd be gold padlock to the top right, correct? I will let you know when I would like it fully protected. At the moment I have a lot more information to add! --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 22:43, 24 July 2024 (EDT)
I could probably lock it down for at least a few years, but can't promise forever. How long were you thinking? Enki (talk) 09:20, 29 July 2024 (EDT)
I was thinking protect it so only people listed as "admins", "bureaucrats" and "editors" can edit it! --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 05:05, 30 July 2024 (EDT)

Encyc mobile app[edit]

I would love to have Encyc on Google Play. Maybe recommend a dark mode for the site. Also some gadgets like category Hotcat or a clock in the top right corner. Maybe have a visual editor mode! Actually I would like Citizen to be the permanent style look. It's much easier. It has light and dark mode. --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 20:22, 28 July 2024 (EDT)

Good questions. First let's talk about dark mode. (explanation for anyone else reading along) We have the Citizen skin installed, which includes a very good dark mode. To enable it click Preferences --> Appearance --> Citizen --> Save. If dark mode doesn't automatically turn on you might need to look in preferences and tell it to automatically detect system preferences or to always use dark mode.
I thought about making Citizen the default but I often switch back and forth between Encyc and WMF projects and MediaWiki.org. I was finding the quick transition too difficult. Now that Wikipedia finally has a dark mode I think we could probably just use theirs at the next upgrade. Of course we would keep Citizen installed for those who prefer it.
As for a mobile app, I think it's disappointing that MediaWiki hasn't released an app that can be used to access any generic MediaWiki installation. They spend so much time and energy supporting WMF projects and sometimes the little guys get forgotten.
Visual editor... request noted. I never liked it but if enough people want it, we could probably make it happen. Do you use it on other projects? Enki (talk) 09:36, 29 July 2024 (EDT)

Encyc app on a smartphone[edit]

Encyc mobile app

--LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 20:54, 29 July 2024 (EDT)

haha nice. How did you make that? Enki (talk) 13:21, 30 July 2024 (EDT)

Short description template[edit]

This template has issues and will not display the short description. For example when you type an article in the search box, it will say something like this: Dove Hepburn and below "British millenarian (1022–2024)", but it doesn't show it! --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 22:01, 8 August 2024 (EDT)

1000 edits![edit]

It's my 1000th edit on Encyc as of 14 August 2024! --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 02:19, 14 August 2024 (EDT)

Nice. Congrats! Enki (talk) 14:52, 14 August 2024 (EDT)
