Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe on the globe

Zimbabwe is a country in southern Africa. It was formerly (under the name Rhodesia, named after Cecil Rhodes) part of the British Empire, then became the only country other than the United States to unilaterally declare independence from the Empire. The white minority, headed by Ian Smith, set up a government and racist system that eventually collapsed under the weight of constant insurrection and unfavorable world opinion.

Robert Mugabe took control and became dictator. During the 2000s he confiscated land from white landowners who were operating large farms. The farms stopped functioning and the breadbasket of Africa experienced famine. The economy then collapsed.
