Abercanaid
Appearance

Abercanaid is a village about 2.5 miles south of Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. On the opposite side of the River Taff is the village of Pentrebach.
The name refers to a stream "Canaid" joining the River Taff. Canaid means "white/pure/bright".[1]
Abercanaid grew in the 19th century due to coal mining in the region. Gethin Colliery was sunk in 1849,[2] and Abercanaid Colliery was sunk in the 1850s.[3]
Abercanaid has a church in the parish of Merthyr Tydfil.[4] It was licensed in 1884, dedicated to St Peter and St Paul.[5] There were also some chapels that have since been demolished.[6]
In local government the village is covered by Troedyrhiw, but the community doesn't have a council.
