Alltmawr

From Encyc
St Mauritius' Church

Alltmawr is a small village in Powys, Wales. Historically it was a parish in Brecknockshire. The village is located on the River Wye, opposite Aberedw and about 5km south-east of Builth Wells.

The village may date to medieval times, though little is recorded about its history. The name is first recorded in c.1566 as gall-mawr meaning "big wooded slope".[1]

At just 10.5m long, St Mauritius' Church is one of the smallest parish churches in Wales. It dates to medieval times and was largely rebuilt in the early 19th century. There is also a set of earthworks to the south of the church, and a farm to the north. There is evidence to suggest that the village was once larger.[1]

The parish covered a very small area.[2] It became a civil parish and later a community which was abolished in 1986.[3] Today it is part of Erwood community.
