Battle of Britain
The Battle of Britain was an air conflict during World War II. Following the evacuation of Dunkirk the Germans planned an amphibious assault to take Great Britain, called Operation Sealion.
Sealion could not take place without air superiority, so the Luftwaffe bombed British airfields in an attempt to destroy so many planes that the RAF would have to retreat out of the area of southern England.
This failed due to the excellence of British pilots as well as new technologically superior British aircraft like the Supermarine Spitfire and the Hawker Hurricane. The Germans then shifted to a terror bombing campaign of London, known as The Blitz.
