Bryngwyn, Powys

From Encyc
St Michael's Church

Bryngwyn is a small village in Powys, Wales. It was historically a parish in Radnorshire.

It is located up in the hills about 8km north-west of Hay-on-Wye. It is believed that it is one of the highest villages in the area.[1]

The name Bryngwyn means "white hill". It was first recorded as Brewen in 1231 and as Bringwyn in 1291. The church perhaps dates to early medieval times, though there is no reason to believe there was also an early settlement there.[1]

St Michael's Church was partially rebuilt between 1844 and 1847. There still remains a nave dating to the 13th century and a pillar stone from the 7th-10th century.[1]

The parish also included the larger village of Rhosgoch.[2] Bryngwyn civil parish had a population of 361 in 1831 but declined since then. By 1971 it had population of 130[3] and in 1983 it was abolished.[4] Today it is part of the community of Painscastle.[5]
