Cascob

From Encyc
St Michael's Church

Cascob is a small village in Powys, Wales. Historically it was a parish in Radnorshire.

It is located about 8km west of Presteigne on a small stream called Cascob Brook which flows into the River Lugg.[1]

It is recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Cascop(e). The name is most likely to originate from a personal name "Casca", and would mean a valley associated with Casca.[1]

Not much else is recorded of Cascob's history. St Michael's Church dates to the 13th century, and aside from the church the settlement only includes a farm and a cottage.[1]

It was a small parish not covering much area beyond the village.[2] From 1900 its population remained stable around 50.[3] The civil parish/community was abolished in 1983[4] and is now part of Whitton.

A small part of the parish was part of Litton and Cascob, the remainder (Litton) being from Presteigne parish. Litton and Cascob was historically an exclave of the English county of Herefordshire until the Counties (Detached Parts) Act 1844 moved it to Radnorshire.
