Disserth and Trecoed

From Encyc
St Cewydd's Church in Disserth

Disserth and Trecoed is a former parish in Powys, Wales. It was in the historic county of Radnorshire. In Welsh the name is spelt as Diserth a Thre-coed but this just means the same as the English. At some point the parish was known simply as Disserth. In 2011 the community had a population of 1239.

The parish is named after the village of Disserth (located on the River Ithon), and the nearby township of Trecoed. Disserth comes from Latin "desertum" meaning a wild or deserted place.[1] Trecoed translates to "town of the trees" in English. The community also includes Howey and Crossway in its north, and Caerwnon Park and the north-western half of Cwmbach Llechryd in the south. Cwmbach Llechryd also has its own church.

The church at Disserth is dedicated to St Cewydd. It is believed that he lived in the area during the 6th century, but the church wasn't established until the early medieval period. Notably the church had no restoration efforts in Victorian times, and remains much the same as it did around 1700.[1]
