John of Austria

From Encyc

Don John of Austria (1547-78) was a 16th century military leader, the illegitimate son of Emperor Charles V. He defeated the Moors at the Battle of Granada (1570) and the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Lepanto (1571), thus decisively strengthening Christian Europe against the threat of invasion from Moslem countries. He consolidated this by capturing Tunis in 1573.

He proposed marriage to Mary Queen of Scots but died of typhoid fever before the marriage could be arranged.
