Lake Vyrnwy

From Encyc
Lake Vyrnwy

Lake Vyrnwy is a reservoir in north Wales. In Welsh it is called Llyn Efyrnwy or Llyn Llanwddyn. It was built in the 1880s to supply the city of Liverpool (in north-west England) with fresh water.

When it was constructed, it flooded part of the River Vyrnwy's valley, and destroyed the village of Llanwddyn. The residents of Llanwddyn weren't told about this and of course they opposed the plan.

Llanwddyn was rebuilt, and still exists today at the southern end of the lake.
