Landsker Line

From Encyc
Landsker Line, as it was in 1901

The Landsker Line splits Pembrokeshire and part of western Carmarthenshire, in south-west Wales. To the north of the line is a mostly Welsh speaking area, to the south is a mostly English speaking area.

The exact location of the line has moved throughout history, but a divide between English and Welsh speaking parts of Pembrokeshire has existed for over 1000 years.

The part of Pembrokeshire to the south of the line is known as "Little England beyond Wales". It is unique due to having been English speaking for many centuries, despite being far from England.

The divide can be seen in the place names of the region today. To the north of the line, Welsh names are common (such as Mynachlogddu and Eglwyswrw). To the south of the line, English names are common (such as Hundleton and Johnston).
