Llanddewi Ystradenni

From Encyc
St David's Church

Llanddewi Ystradenni is a parish in central Powys, Wales. Historically it was part of Radnorshire.

The parish is centred on the village of Llanddewi, about 9km north-east of Llandrindod Wells, off the eastern bank of the River Ithon where a small stream joins it.[1]

The name was first recorded in 1297 as Thlandewy, though the second half of the name appears earlier in the 12th century as ystrad nynhid. The name means St David's church in the vale of Nynnid.[1]

St David's Church perhaps dates to early medieval times, though the earliest remaining part is from the 13th century. It was fully rebuilt in 1890.[1]

The parish historically covered a significant area to the east and west of the village.[2] The modern community no longer includes areas west of the Clywedog Brook but aside from that it is largely unchanged. As of 2011 it had a population of 310.

The site of Buddugre Castle is near the village, at the opposite side of the River Ithon. There is also the site of Castell Cwm Aran is at the north-eastern edge of the parish.
