Llanfihangel Rhydithon

From Encyc
St Michael's Church

Llanfihangel Rhydithon[1] is a parish in Powys, Wales. It is located about halfway between the towns of Llandrindod Wells and Knighton. Historically it was part of Radnorshire.

The place was first recorded in 1291 as Langmiclen and as Thlan Mihangel Redyethan in 1304. "Rhydithon" was probably added to distinguish from the many other places called Llanfihangel in Wales. It would signify a ford (rhyd) of the River Ithon, but the Ithon is several kilometres away so it is unclear where this comes from. Perhaps it had been a district name.[2]

St Michael's Church was entirely rebuilt in 1838, though the 14th-century font survives. The church is located at the south bank of the Maes Brook, a small tributary of the River Aran.[2]

The parish (and modern community) has two main population centres - one to the east of the church, and one near Dolau railway station to the west. Aside from those areas it is very sparsely populated.[3] As of 2011 it had a population of 228.
