Nantmel

Nantmel is a village in Powys, Wales. Historically it was a parish in Radnorshire.
The parish included a rather large rural area, including the hamlets of Nant Glas and Carmel. Nantmel village was roughly central in the parish.[1]
The place name was first recorded as Nantmayl in 1259. The current form Nantmel was first recorded in 1513. Usually "nant" refers to a stream in Welsh, but in this case it is more likely to signify a valley. Mael is a personal name, also seen in the cantref of Maelienydd.[2]
Local tradition suggests that the church was founded by St Cynllo in the 5th century. Evidence points towards an early medieval foundation, but a more specific date is not known. Most of St Cynllo's Church was rebuilt in 1792.[2]
At the west of the parish, at a place called Ysfa south-west of Nant Glas, is a church dedicated to St Mark.
The current community covers roughly the same area as the parish. As of 2011 it had a population of 637.
