Napoleon Bonaparte was the emperor of France, taking over as leader following the French Revolution. He was a brilliant general, but overreached by invading Russia and getting caught there by an early winter. On the retreat most of his army starved or froze to death.

He was exiled to Elba, then tried to make a comeback in 1815. He was defeated at Waterloo, and then exiled to St. Helena in the Atlantic Ocean. He died a few years later.

He was from Corsica. He married Josephine. His height was about 5'6", which was about average for his time and place, but British cartoonists depicted him as very short.

He also got bogged down in Spain fighting the British.

His main successes were campaigns in Italy, and against Auslotria and Prussia.

At sea he was defeated by the British at Trafalgar.

He also invaded Egypt but was defeated at Alexandria.

He wrote the Napoleonic Code, which introduced sweeping legal changes to Europe and modernized the continent, reducing the privileges of the Church and the aristocracy and moving towards equal rights for women and minorities.
