Newport (Casnewydd in Welsh) is a city at the mouth of the River Usk in south Wales. It is about 12 miles north-east of the Welsh capital, Cardiff.

Newport grew as a port during the 19th century, overshadowing the historic Roman town of Caerleon just to its north. In 2002 Newport was granted city status.

Newport is also a much larger county borough which extends deeper into rural areas, including the forest of Wentwood at its north-eastern edge. As of 2021 the county borough has a population of about 160,000.
