River Usk
Appearance

The River Usk (Afon Wysg in Welsh) is located in south Wales, and is one of the largest rivers in all of Wales.
It is about 125 km long, rising on the slopes of the Black Mountain at the border of Carmarthenshire and Powys. It then flows south-east, past the towns of Brecon, Crickhowell, Abergavenny, Usk, and Caerleon, before joining the Severn estuary at Newport.[1]
Like many rivers its exact length is disputed, with sources generally ranging from 120–137 km,[2][3] but occasionally other lengths are given.[4]
Its name is thought to come from an ancient Common Brittonic word meaning "abounding with fish". That word is cognate with the modern Welsh word "pysg" which means fish.
