Pentrefoelas
Pentrefoelas is a village in Conwy County Borough, Wales, about halfway between Betws-y-Coed and Cerrigydrudion on the A5 road. Historically it was a parish in Denbighshire.
Pentrefoelas is located on the River Merddwr, to the south of the upland region Mynydd Hiraethog. It takes its name from "pentre" (village) and the nearby hill Foel Las, the site of a former motte and bailey castle.[1]
The first recorded place name in the area was Pentre vidog chapel in 1680, referring to a nearby chapel. In 1801 it was recorded as Capel Voelas ("capel" = chapel) and in 1838 it was Pentre Foelas.[1] In the 19th century it was often spelt Pentrevoelas in English.
Most of the parish's area was upland and it also included the hamlet Rhydlydan. It was originally part of Llannefydd parish until it was split in November 1810.[2] Pentrefoelas parish church was first built in 1766 and a new one was built in 1857-9.[1] The church has no dedication.[3][4]
As a civil parish it absorbed Tre Brys in 1935 (a small part of Ysbyty Ifan parish directly south of Pentrefoelas village).[5][6] In 1974 civil parishes in Wales became known as communities. As of 2011 the community had a population of 356.
