Penybont, Powys

From Encyc

Penybont (or Pen-y-bont) is a village north-east of Llandrindod Wells in Powys, Wales. Historically it was in Radnorshire.

The place name Penybont means "end of the bridge", referring to a bridge over the River Ithon.

Penybont is also a community, governed by Penybont & District Community Council.[1] The community was established in 1983[2] and also includes the village of Llandegley. Its boundaries are similar to the former Llandegley parish and parts also came from nearby Cefnllys parish. As of 2011 the community had a population of 428.

There was a methodist chapel at Penybont.[3]

Penybont is best known for horse racing, with a harness racing track at the centre of the village behind the Severn Arms pub. Football has also been played in the village since the 1880s and the local club Penybont United FC was reformed in 1945.[4]

Pen-y-Bont railway station on the Heart of Wales Line serves the village but is actually closer to nearby Crossgates.
