Pontarfynach

Pontarfynach / Devil's Bridge is a village in Ceredigion, Wales. It is known for three bridges across the River Mynach, each one built on top of the previous bridge.
The first bridge was built some time between 1075-1200. Legend says an old woman lost her cow and found it grazing on the other side of the river. The Devil appeared and agreed to build a bridge in return for the soul of the first living thing to cross it. The woman threw a crust of bread over the river, which her dog went to get - so the Devil left with the soul of the dog. The name Devil's Bridge comes from this legend, whereas Pontarfynach simply refers to the "bridge on the Mynach".
The most recent bridge was built in 1901.
By the mid 1700s the area had became a tourist attraction.
Pontarfynach is also the name of a local government community, also including the villages of Capel Trisant, Rhos y Gell and Cwmystwyth. It mostly corresponds with the former chapelry of Eglwys Newydd in Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn parish.[1]
