Portugal
Portugal is a European nation on the Iberian Peninsula, bordered by Spain to the north and east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west, with Lisbon as its capital.
The Portuguese were skilled sailors and prominent during the early Age of Exploration beginning in the 15th century. They were the first to round the Cape of Good Hope and to reach India by sea. They also established a colony in Brazil. As a result of its colonial empire, the Portuguese language has been brought to many continents, and as such it's called a polycentric language.
Portugal was friendly to the British during the Napoleonic Wars but was one of the few neutral countries during World War II.
It was ruled by a dictatorship for about five decades, prior to the Carnation Revolution, which overthrew it.
