Somaliland

From Encyc
Somaliland location on the world map

Somaliland is a country in eastern Africa, south of the Gulf of Aden. To the northwest is Djibouti, the southwest Ethiopia, and to the east is Somalia. Across the Gulf of Aden to the north is Yemen. The capital is Hargeisa.

Somaliland was colonized by the Arabs in the 12th century and then by the British in the 19th century. It gained independence in 1960.

The region is claimed by Somalia, but multiple civil wars and lack of a functioning government in Mogadishu have given Somaliland independence.

In 2025, Somaliland was recognized by Israel, and many other countries maintain informal relations.
