Cadfarch

Cadfarch is a community in north-west Powys, Wales. It was in the historic county of Montgomeryshire. In 2011 it had a population of 855.
Cadfarch Community Council covers an area to the south and south-east of Machynlleth, at the bottom of the Dyfi Valley. It shares a border with Ceredigion, and is the only part of Powys that reaches the sea.[1]
The community was founded in 1987 from three smaller communities.[2] These are also still the names of the community wards:[3]
- Penegoes - including Penegoes, the eastern side of Forge, and Aberhosan.[4]
- Isygarreg - including Derwenlas.[5]
- Uwchygarreg - including the western side of Forge.[5]
Some southern areas of the parish of Darowen, including Abergwydol and Melinbyrhedyn are also part of Cadfarch.[6] The northern half of Darowen is now part of Glantwymyn.[7]
The name "Cadfarch" comes from a 6th century saint, who founded the church at Penegoes. He also founded the church in Abererch in north-west Wales.[8] Today the church in Abererch is dedicated to his brother, Cawrdaf.[9][10]
