Evan Winter is a Canadian novelist. His first novel The Rage of Dragons was self-published.[1] Orbit Books re-released it and signed Winter to a four-book deal. CBC Books listed Winter's 2020 novel The Fires of Vengeance on its list of Canadian fiction to watch for in spring 2020.[2]
The Rage of Dragons was on the long list of the CBC's 2020 Canada Reads.[3]
Winter was born in England.[4] While his parents were from South America his ethnic heritage is Xhosan. He lived in Africa, as a child, as he described how a question about the classes plans for their future careers', from his third grade teacher, in Zambia, helped crystalize his plans to become a writer.
He said that he was a fan of fantasy, growing up, he missed seeing fantasy characters who looked like him.[4] Winter described his precocious son as a trigger for his first novel. Even though he was still only seven years old he had almost finished reading the Harry Potter series. He wanted his son to be able to read his novels.
CBC Books describes his series as African-inspired fantasy.[5][6] Time magazine wrote this novel "touted as a cross between Gladiator and Game of Thrones."[7] In an interview Winter described The Rage of Dragons as "Game of Thrones meets Gladiator on Arrakis", and listed author Robert Jordan as an additional influence.[4]
Winter said the combat sequences in the novels were informed by his study of Brazilian Jui Jitsu.[4]
The sequel The Fires of Vengeance was published in 2020.[8] The third novel, The Lord of Demons, is scheduled to be available in October 2026.[9]

Born in England to South American parents, Evan Winter was raised in Africa near the historical territory of his Xhosa ancestors. Evan has always loved fantasy novels, but when his son was born, he realized that there weren’t many epic fantasy novels featuring characters who looked like him.
