Llanfihangel Helygen

From Encyc
St Michael's Church

Llanfihangel Helygen was a parish north-west of Llandrindod Wells in Powys, Wales. Historically it was part of Radnorshire.

The parish was first documented as Llanvehangell in 1544 and as Llanihangell Yelegen in 1556. This name refers to St Michael's church ("Llanfihangel") of the willow tree ("Helygen"). Sometimes it was known as Llanfihangel Fach ("fach" means small), this was first recorded in 1566.[1]

Nothing is known about the early history of St Michael's Church, though a font perhaps dates to the 13th century. The walls were mostly rebuilt in c.1812 and the building was restored in 1956. There is no evidence to suggest that a settlement grew around the church, it seems to have always been an isolated church with some farms nearby. The nearest dwelling to the church is Little House (just over 100m north) which has an early 19th century cowhouse and some evidence for an earlier building.[1]

The parish was small and had not much else of note.[2] It was a civil parish, and later a community until 1983.[3] Today it is part of Llanyre community.
