Llangasty Talyllyn
Llangasty Talyllyn is a parish in Powys, Wales. Historically it was in Brecknockshire.
It is nearly 9km east-south-east of Brecon, on the southern edge of Llangors Lake. The church is on ground sloping towards the shores of the lake about 100m away, and is about 2m above the current water level.[1] The parish also included parts of Pennorth and Talyllyn.[2]
The place name refers to the church (llan) of St Casten/Casteu at the end (tal) of the lake (llyn). In 1513 it was recorded as Llangasten, and in 1643 as Llangastey Talyllyn.[1]
This unique dedication (now spelt Gastyn[3]) is not found anywhere else and suggests that the church originates in early medieval times. By 1838 it was a "dark, ancient and decaying edifice", this structure may have dated to the mid-16th century. It was rebuilt in 1848 and nothing remains of any previous building on the site. There is no evidence that a settlement ever grew around the church.[1]
From known records, the civil parish's population peaked at the 1851 census, at 233 people. Its population was last recorded in 1971, at 121 people.[4] Civil parishes in Wales became communities in 1974 and it was abolished in 1986.[5] Today it is part of Llangors community.
