Penybontfawr is a village in northern Powys, Wales. It is in the valley of the River Tanat. Historically it was in Montgomeryshire.
It was the main settlement of Pennant Melangell parish, which was named for a church to the west which was later made part of Llangynog.[1] Pennant existed as a community until 1987 when it merged with Hirnant and became Penybontfawr.[2] The community had a population of 440 as of 2011.
St Thomas' Church was built in 1855 and later became the parish church of Pennant Melangell. It was built to serve the needs of the area's expanding population. The village dates mostly to the 19th century.[3]
The village had a station on the Tanat Valley Light Railway from 1904 to 1951.
