Tirabad
Tirabad is a village in Powys, Wales. Historically it was in Brecknockshire.
The village is on the River Dulas at the edge of Crychan Forest. It is next to the north-western edge of the Sennybridge Training Area and to its west is the border with Carmarthenshire.
The name Tirabad means "abbot's land" and is recorded as Tyr yr abate as early as 1619. In the late 1690s it was recorded as Tŷr Abat and in 1821 it was recorded as Newchurch Tyr Abbott.[1]
Prior to the early 18th century, the settlement may have comprised only its church and a farm. St David's Church was built in the 18th century and refurbished in 1871. If there was any earlier structure there, nothing is known of it.[1]
The farmhouse at Glandulas, about 100m north of the church, is the only other building of any age. It dates to the 17th century.[1]
Tirabad has also been known as Llandulas. This name was probably formed from the River Dulas or Glandulas farm.[1] It has variably been stated as a separate parish or as part of Llangammarch parish.[2]
Llandulas was also the name of a civil parish. In 1951 its population was recorded as 62, however this grew to over 100 in the following two censuses.[3] In 1974 civil parishes in Wales became communities, and it was abolished in 1986.[4] Today it is part of Llangammarch community.
