View of Maesteg

Maesteg is a town of about 20,000 people, in the Llynfi Valley of south Wales.

The community also includes Garth, Nantyffyllon and Caerau. Historically it was part of the parish of Llangynwyd.[1]

Maesteg grew in importance in the 19th century, due to ironworks and coal mining. Before then it was very sparsely populated. The last pit closed in 1985.

The name "Maesteg" means "fair field".
