Bettws Penpont

From Encyc

Bettws Penpont is a church in Powys, Wales. It was perhaps founded in the 12th/13th century, and was almost entirely rebuilt in 1864. It is just south of the River Usk, about 7 miles west of Brecon.[1]

The name "Penpont" means head (pen) of the bridge (pont), like the common Welsh place name Penybont. "Bettws" refers to a prayer house and is also a common Welsh place name.

Bettws Penpont was a chapelry in the parish of Llanspyddid.[2] Historically it was part of Brecknockshire. Named simply as Penpont, it was a civil parish/community until 1986.[3] It was always a small civil parish, with no settlement of note - its population was only 49 when it was last recorded in 1971.[4] It is now part of Trallong community.

In the area is Penpont Manor House, a Grade I listed building, built in the 17th century. Penpont Bridge is Grade II* listed.
